A fresher’s trip to Gingee fort was organized on 14th August, 2013. Students of all classes took part in the trip. Students enjoyed travelling together witnessing the remnants of the historical fort.
2nd September, 2013
A workshop on ‘Mushroom Cultivation’, Funded by DBT-Star College Scheme was held for undergraduate students of Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Zoology and Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology from 2nd September to 7th September, 2014. Twenty five students were trained in the techniques of mushroom cultivation. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Kaviarasan, Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany, University of Madras, who delivered the inaugural address on “Edible Mushrooms and Biotechnological potential of Fungi”.

A workshop on ‘Cytological, Histochemical and Palynological Techniques using Microscope’, Funded by DBT-Star College Scheme was held for undergraduate students of Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Zoology and Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology on 13th and 14th September, 2014.

The inauguration of Botany Society and PG Botany Club was held on 18th September, 2013. After a brief introductory remark by the Head of the Department, Prof. R. Rengasamy, Director, CAS in Botany, University of Madras, inaugurated the activities of Botany Society and PG Botany Club and delivered the inaugural address on “Potential of Micro algae in Biofuel Production”.

A workshop on ‘Freshwater Algae-Collection, Identification and Isolation’, Funded by DBT-Star College Scheme was held for undergraduate students from 23rd September to 28th September, 2014. Twenty five students of Departments of Zoology and Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology were trained. Introductory remarks and welcome address was delivered by Dr.Arul Samraj, Head of the Department of Zoology and Overall Coordinator of Star College scheme. The meeting was presided over by Dr.R.W.Alexander Jesudasan, Principal and the special address was delivered by Mr. C.Sundaraj, Bursar. Dr.V.Sivasubramanian, Director, Phycotech Environmental Research Centre, Chennai delivered the inaugural address in which he stressed the importance of algal collection, identification and bringing them into culture for utilizing their biotechnological capabilities. The valedictory function was held on 28th September, 2013. Prof. D.E.P.Jeyasingh, Former Head of the Department of Botany delivered the valedictory address and distributed the certificates for the participants.

Dr. Pon Samuel Jeyakumar, Former faculty member of the botany department, gave a talk on ‘Current trends in Biotechnology and future prospects’ for III B.Sc. and PG students on 1st October, 2013.

Dr. V.V.Subramanian, Executive Director, Phycotech Environmental Research Centre, Chennai delivered a motivational talk entitled “Go Beyond” to the members of the Botany Society on 4th October, 2013.

Christmas celebration was held in the Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology from 2 pm onwards on 12th December, 2013. Rev. M. Enose delivered the God’s message. This was then followed by songs, skits and dance program by students to glorify the Lord Jesus.

Dr.K.R.Venkatasubban oratorical inter-college competition was held on 30th January, 2014 in the Gallery of the Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology. The Inter-College competition among students of city colleges was first started in the year 1970-1971. It has been named after the former Professor and Head of the Department of Botany, Madras Christian College, Dr.K.R.Venkata Subban. He served the Department as HOD and teacher with total dedication and commitment for 24 long years. He is remembered by his students and former colleagues for his inspiring scholarly lectures. The rolling trophy is awarded to the best college team adjudged by a panel of subject experts and individual prizes as well to the best speakers. The Department has been organizing this annual event bringing together students from other colleges to participate in the competition.
Students in teams from six colleges took part in the event and the team comprising of Ms. Unnati Jaiswal and Ms. Nyabi Bagra from Women Christian College came first and won the rolling trophy for the current academic year.

The department has conducted a training program on Environment and Social Impact Assessment and Indigenous Knowledge Documentation for 3 faculty members and 14 Post Graduate students of the Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystem, Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong from 24th February to 3rd March, 2014.

B-Day (Botany Day) was held on 10th March, 2014. Intra-departmental off-stage competitions were held from 3rd March to 6th March and all on stage competitions were held on 10th March. Students in large numbers took part in all events and won various prizes in all the games. This year’s cultural rolling shield was won by final PG students.

I B.Sc. and III B.Sc. students have made a study trip to Kodaikanal. They left for Kodai on 11th evening and returned on the Morning of 15th March, 2014. Students were accompanied by Dr.A.I.Ebenezer, Dr. S.Ravi Shankar, Dr. P.Selva Singh Richard, Mrs. Selva Singh and Dr. M.G.Ebbie

I M.Sc. students were taken to Mahabalipuram and Kovalam on a day long study trip. At Mahabalipuram, students visited the recently inaugurated “Shell Museum” located near five Rathas, by the side of the road leading to Kalpakkam. After lunch they were taken to Kovalam beach to study marine algae. They all arrived college campus around 6 pm.
